Homemade Vanilla Extract

Homemade Vanilla Extract

Making homemade extract is easy with only 2 ingredients - Vodka and Vanilla Beans.  The type of vodka doesn't necessarily matter neither does the type of vanilla bean, however, as with anything else, you will get a slightly different flavor depending on the type of bean and vodka.

For every 1 cup of vodka you'll need 3 whole vanilla beans.

If you're adding to a full bottle of vodka, start by removing about 1 cup of vodka.  Set it aside.  Split your beans down the center and scrap the beans from the pod with a knife.

Add the beans and the pod to the bottle of vodka.  Once you've done this with all beans, add the reserved cup of vodka until the bottle is full.  Shake the bottle and put aside for 2 -4 months.

Weekly, or when you think of it, shake the bottle.  Check it after 2 months.  It should smell strongly of vanilla and be dark and slightly syrupy.  If it isn't, put it aside for a couple of weeks and continue to shake and check on it.

You can pour it into smaller bottles or keep it in the vodka bottle to use.

  1. I started some in February this year! However, I didn't scrape the beans first - just stuck them whole into the vodka. It's not syrupy, but has a wonderful vanilla aroma and is a nice dark color... Now I know how to do it right next time!

  2. I had no idea it was this 'easy' to make vanilla extract. I was just at a 'Home Goods' store yesterday and saw that they had a bottle with a vanilla bean in it, and all you were to do was to add the vodka--They were selling it for $15--Yours is no doubt going to be better, and a little less inexpensive! I'm definitely going to keep this in mind and do it myself, but I do hope you'll let us know how it turns out.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  6. I have been making home made vanilla for many years now. The only change I made was the brand of vodka. Only because I did some research and found that the purest & cleanest vodka was "Skye". It is the only one I have ever used but then again that is only my opinion.:-)

  7. I'm making some too! I actually need to order my bottles soon. I put mine in a mason jar. Did yiu strain your liquid when you transferred to the bottles? I see the vanilla beans in the mix. I think it'd be fine but others that receive it might not be use to it.. lol.
